Apple iPad 2 , Hardware:  Weight and Size

The Apple iPad 2 is 33% thinner than the original iPad, it is also thinner than the iPhone 4 by 0.5mm and 15% lighter than the original iPad. It is available in 2 versions GSM and CDMA known respectively as the AT&T and Verizon versions in USA. Wi-Fi version is 1.33 lb (600 g) and there is slight mass difference between GSM and CDMA versions due to different cellular radios, with the GSM model at 1.35 lb (612 g) and the CDMA model at lb (608 g). Its size is also less at only 9.5×7.31x.346 in (240x186x8.8 mm) compared with original iPad’s size at 9.56×7.47x.528 in (243x190x13.4 mm)

Hardware: The A5 chip

Apple introduced its own custom-designed 1GHz dual-core A5 chip which is dramatically a faster processor. It uses the same amount of power as iPhone’s A4 chip, but it is twice as fast. According to Apple, its graphics processing is up to nine times faster.

Hardware: Input and Screen

Like 1st generation iPad, it has 4 physical switches including a home button near the display through which users can return to the main menu and other 3 plastic physical switches on the sides which are used for wake/ sleep and volume up/ down, a third button which is either for screen rotation lock or mute. According to Business Insider, the home button on the Apple iPad 2 is easier to double tap than the 1st generation of the iPad. Apple has integrated a new thinner glass technology for the touch screen overlay, eliminated the stamped sheet metal frame from the display and reduced the space between the display and battery in iPad 2. That’s why the Apple iPad 2 ’s screen is thinner, lighter and yet stronger than the original iPad’s.

Hardware: Audio

Using iPad’s built in speakers, it can play audio in mono. Its frequency response range is between 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. We can also get Dolby Digital stereo or even 5.1 surround sound by attaching Apple’s Digital AV Adapter with it.

Hardware: Cameras

Apple iPad 2The new Apple iPad 2 adds 2 cameras, front and rear-facing which allow FaceTime video calls with iPhone 4, fourth generation iPod Touch and Macintosh computers (Running Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with a webcam). The front 0.3MP camera shoots VGA quality 30 fps video and VGA quality still photos. The 0.7MP rear camera can shoot 720p HD video at 30 fps and has a 5x digital zoom. Both cameras shoot photos and videos in a 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio while the iPhone 4 shoots in a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.

Hardware: Power

Like original iPad, it has a 25 watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery that lasts 10 hours. It is charged through USB or a 10 watt, 2 amp power adapter which is included with it. iPad 2’s battery is 2.5 mm thick which is 59% smaller than the original iPad. Also it has three cells instead of two. These improvements made possible to exclude the injection-molded plastic support frame from iPad 2.

iPad with 3G

Its 3G versions offer CDMA2000 support for customers using the device on a CDMA network (e.g. Verizon Wireless in the United States) or GSM/UMTS support for customers using Apple iPad 2 on a GSM/UMTS network.
